DIN PN16 Lug Type Butterfly Valve — Ductile Iron Body, SS304 Disc, EPDM Seat

The DIN PN16 Lug type butterfly valve is the equivalent of the ANSI 150 Lug version for installations with European standard DIN pipes and flanges — the same dead-end service functionality, the same materials (ductile iron body, SS304 disc, EPDM seat) and the same working pressure of 230 psi (PN16), with face-to-face dimensions and bolt drilling conforming to DIN standard instead of ANSI B16.5. This is the correct specification when existing piping is DIN PN10/PN16 and direct dimensional compatibility without adapters is required.

DIN PN16 vs. ANSI 150 — when to specify each standard

The selection between DIN and ANSI is not a matter of preference — it is about compatibility with existing piping and equipment in the installation:

Criterion DIN PN16 Lug Butterfly Valve ← This product ANSI 150 Lug Butterfly Valve
Flange Standard DIN EN 1092-1 / PN10-PN16 ASME B16.5 Class 150
Bolt diameter and bolt circle DIN — metric dimensions ANSI — inch dimensions
Equivalent nominal pressure PN16 (230 psi / 16 bar) Class 150 (285 psi / 19.6 bar)
Typical installations in Mexico Equipment imported from Europe, plants with German, Dutch or Spanish engineering ✅ Majority of Mexican industrial installations — predominant ANSI standard
Industries with frequent DIN usage Automotive industry (German plants), fine chemicals, breweries, food industry with European origin Oil & Gas, petrochemicals, municipal water
Direct compatibility with existing piping ✅ With DIN piping and flanges — no adapters ✅ With ANSI piping and flanges — no adapters
Interchangeability with existing valves ✅ Directly replaces existing DIN valves ✅ Directly replaces existing ANSI valves

Practical rule: If the piping has DIN flanges with metric bolts (M16, M20) and face-to-face dimensions in millimeters according to DIN, specify this valve. If the piping has ANSI flanges with inch bolts (3/4", 7/8") and face-to-face dimensions according to ASME B16.10, specify the ANSI 150 Lug version.

Lug Type — dead-end service and independent isolation

Similar to the ANSI 150 version, the threaded bores of the Lug body allow the valve to be bolted directly to each flange independently:

  • Dead-end service: The valve withstands system pressure with only the upstream flange connected — allowing the downstream flange to be disconnected for equipment maintenance without emptying the upstream line.
  • End-of-line: Suitable for installation at the end of a pipe where there is no flange on the opposite side — the valve is bolted only to the upstream flange and withstands the line pressure.
  • Equipment replacement without general shutdown: Close the valve, remove the bolts from the downstream flange, intervene the equipment — the upstream system remains pressurized and in operation.

Ductile iron — greater mechanical strength than gray iron

  • Tensile strength 400–500 MPa vs. 200–250 MPa of gray iron GG25 — greater structural strength for the threaded Lug bores under unilateral pressure
  • Higher ductility: Does not fail brittlely under impact — greater safety in industrial installations
  • Higher fatigue resistance: The threaded bores of the Lug body better withstand pressure loading and unloading cycles without crack initiation

Industries with frequent DIN flanges in Mexico

  • Automotive industry — plants of German origin: Plants of German manufacturers (Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi) and their Tier 1 suppliers in Mexico use DIN standard in their process, HVAC and industrial services installations. The DIN PN16 Lug valve is the correct specification for any expansion or replacement in these plants.
  • Brewing and beverage industry with European technology: Breweries with equipment of German, Czech or Dutch origin often have water and steam services in DIN standard. The DIN PN16 Lug butterfly valve with EPDM is the standard isolation valve for service water and process water lines in these installations.
  • Fine chemical with European engineering: Fine chemical, pharmaceutical and specialty chemical plants designed by European engineering (German, Swiss, Dutch) frequently specify DIN for piping and valves in their piping classes.
  • Food plants with European equipment: Food processing facilities with German, Italian or Spanish technology where water and steam services are in DIN standard.
  • HVAC in buildings with DIN specification: HVAC systems in corporate and commercial buildings designed with European standard — chilled water and hot water distribution in PN16 DIN.
  • Water treatment with European equipment: Water treatment plants designed with European technology where piping and equipment are DIN — the DIN PN16 Lug butterfly valve allows direct replacements without modifying existing flanges.
