3-Way Ball Valve in 316 Stainless Steel — NPT Thread, Diverter and Mixer, L and T Port

The 3-way SS316 ball valve with NPT thread solves in a single threaded component what would normally require two 2-way valves: with a single ball and a 90° turn, it diverts flow between two alternative destinations (L port) or mixes two fluids into a single outlet (T port). Its design combines a monoblock central body that houses the ball and seats as a single integral piece, with three individually removable NPT threaded ends — each port can be independently removed for inspection or maintenance without affecting the other two ports or removing the central body from the line.

Available in diameters from ½" to 3" with PTFE seat, integrated ISO 5211 mounting pad for automation, and NPT thread on all three connection ports.

L Port vs. T Port — specify the correct one before ordering

The L port and T port have completely different behaviors. This is the most important data when ordering this valve:

L Port — Diversion between Two Destinations or Selection between Two Sources

The L port ball always connects only two of the three ports — never all three simultaneously.

  • 0° Position: Port A connected to Port B. Port C blocked.
  • 90° Position: Port A connected to Port C. Port B blocked.

Use L port for:

  • Flow diversion between two destinations — send fluid to tank A or tank B
  • Selection between two supply sources — feed from the main line or the backup line
  • Equipment bypass — send through equipment or through direct bypass
  • Dual feed systems — instantaneous switching without flow interruption

T Port — Mixing, Simultaneous Distribution or Recirculation

The T port ball in the central position connects all three ports simultaneously. In extreme positions, it connects only two.

  • 0° Position (central): Ports A, B and C connected simultaneously
  • 90° Position: Port A with Port B only
  • -90° Position: Port A with Port C only

Use T port for:

  • Mixing two fluids — combine two streams into a single outlet
  • Recirculation vs. process — recirculate to the source tank or send to process
  • Distribution to two destinations with simultaneous position at start-up

Body design — central monoblock with removable NPT ends

The design of this valve combines the advantages of the monoblock body with the ease of maintenance of removable designs:

  • Monoblock central body: The ball, seats, and seals are contained in the single-piece central body without internal mechanical joints. There are no gaskets between body parts that could be leakage points under pressure or vibration — structural integrity is maximized.
  • Three individually removable NPT ends: Each of the three connection ports is a threaded end that screws into the central body and can be completely independently removed — without affecting the other two ports. When one end is removed, the corresponding port becomes accessible for inspection, cleaning, or connection to a different pipe, while the other two remain installed and sealed.
  • Maintenance without removing the body from the line: If the seats require inspection or replacement, the three ends are removed and the central body becomes fully accessible — without cutting pipes or disassembling permanent connections. Once checked, the ends are reinstalled with PTFE tape or thread sealant.
  • Reconfiguration flexibility: The three removable NPT ends allow changing the orientation of the ports or connection to different pipe diameters simply by replacing the corresponding end — without replacing the entire valve.

Automation — ISO 5211 for quarter-turn

The ISO 5211 mounting pad allows direct mounting of pneumatic or electric quarter-turn actuators. Specific considerations for automating 3-way valves:

  • Define fail-safe position before ordering: The single-acting actuator moves the valve to a predefined position (A or B) upon loss of air or signal. Define which circuit should remain active in case of failure — this decision determines the NC or NO configuration and the mounting position of the actuator.
  • Do not use in intermediate position: The 3-way valve is an ON/OFF component — operate only between the two extreme positions (0° and 90°). For continuous proportional mixing, use a 3-way globe valve with a positioner.
  • Operating torque in large diameters: In 2" and 3" with high process pressures, verify that the selected actuator has sufficient torque — the required torque is greater than in the 2-way ball of the same diameter due to the geometry of the L or T ball.

Main applications

  • Instrumentation and manifolds: The most frequent application of threaded 3-way valves in Mexico. Selection of reference source in instrumentation manifolds, diversion between two measuring instruments for calibration without interrupting the process, bypass of instrumentation filters. The compact ½" and ¾" format is standard in these services.
  • Gas and industrial gas distribution: Selection between two supply lines for natural gas, nitrogen, CO₂, or LPG in installations with main and backup sources. The L port SS316 with NPT thread is installed directly on existing connections.
  • Purified water and reverse osmosis systems: Diversion between purified water distribution circuits, selection between production source and storage tank, bypass of cartridge filters. SS316 does not contaminate the water with metal ions.
  • Chemical industry — reagent selection and diversion: Selection between two alternative reagents for addition to the same process point, diversion of product between two storage destinations. The NPT thread in SS316 covers the chemical compatibility of the most frequent aqueous reagents.
  • Laboratories and analysis facilities: Selection between two samples or two reference sources in online analysis systems, bypass of measuring cells for calibration without interrupting the analytical process. The compact ½" format is standard in these installations.
  • Mixing of aqueous fluids (T port): Combination of two aqueous streams at fixed proportions at a single mixing point — hot and cold water, two solutions of different concentrations, process water and adjustment reagent. The central position of the T port simultaneously connects all three ports for continuous mixing.
