316 Stainless Steel Wafer Butterfly Valve — PTFE Disc and Seat for Enhanced Chemical Resistance
The 316 stainless steel wafer butterfly valve with PTFE disc and seat offers the highest chemical resistance within the SS316 butterfly valve family. Unlike the EPDM seat version—intended for water and general services—this variant combines an SS316 body with a PTFE-coated disc and a PTFE seat, extending chemical compatibility to dilute acids, moderate alkalis, low-aggressiveness solvents, and fluids that would degrade EPDM. It is the right choice when the fluid is moderately corrosive to SS316 or when conventional elastomeric seats are not compatible.
Construction Materials
- Body: CF8M Stainless Steel (cast equivalent to SS316) — corrosion resistance for seawater, saline solutions, moderate acids, and alkalis
- Disc: SS316 Stainless Steel with PTFE coating — the coating protects the metal disc from contact with corrosive fluid in the open position, where the disc remains in the flow
- Seat: PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) — superior chemical resistance to EPDM, NBR, and Viton. Compatible with most acids, alkalis, and solvents in moderate concentrations. Temperature up to 150 °C.
- Shaft / Stem: SS316 Stainless Steel with PTFE seals

Why PTFE instead of EPDM in an SS316 butterfly valve?
The EPDM seat covers most water and neutral fluid services up to 130 °C. The PTFE seat extends compatibility to fluids that degrade EPDM:
- ✅ Diluted acids: H₂SO₄ up to 30%, HCl up to 20%, HNO₃ up to 25%, acetic acid up to 80%
- ✅ Moderate alkalis: NaOH up to 30%, diluted ammonia solutions
- ✅ Seawater at elevated temperatures (up to 60 °C)
- ✅ Moderate oxidizing solutions: hypochlorite up to 10%, hydrogen peroxide up to 15%
- ✅ Low-aggressiveness organic solvents: alcohols, acetates
- ✅ Purified water and demineralized water where EPDM might release trace compounds
- ✅ High-purity fluids in pharmaceutical and food industries (utility areas)
- ⚠️ For concentrated acids (H₂SO₄ >70%, HF, ClO₂): use PFA anti-corrosion valve →
Difference from the SS316 EPDM seat butterfly valve
| Feature | SS316 EPDM Seat | SS316 Disc + PTFE Seat ← This product |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Temperature | 130 °C | ✅ 150 °C |
| Compatibility with dilute acids | Limited | ✅ Enhanced — PTFE resists most dilute acids |
| Compatibility with organic solvents | ❌ EPDM not compatible | ✅ Compatible in low concentrations |
| Compatibility with water and HVAC | ✅ First choice | ✅ Compatible — but higher cost than EPDM |
| Disc Protection | SS316 exposed to fluid | ✅ PTFE-coated disc — no metal-fluid contact |
| Relative Cost | ✅ Lower | Higher — justified for corrosive fluids |
